What Is A Diaper Cake?
If you are looking to get a very unique baby gift for a baby shower, you should seriously consider a diaper cake. So, what is a diaper cake anyway?
Basically, it's a cake made out of diapers. Ok, maybe that's the obvious explanation, but sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words, so, here is a picture of a diaper cake so you can see what I mean...
Pretty cute, isn't it?
Diaper cakes come in all shapes and sizes. Some are loaded with goodies, others are simple and elegant looking.
I know of a few people who actually make these on their own (but unless you've done it before, I would HIGHLY recommend buying one from someone who knows what they are doing).
Nonetheless, since each diaper cake is handmade and can be topped with an unlimited number of customized goodies, it makes for one of the most unique baby gifts you could ever give. I've only been to a couple of showers where a diaper cake was given as a gift, but both times they were the talk of the party.
In fact, diaper cakes are one of my favorite gifts to give these days. I tried to make one on my own one time, but it did not turn out very well.
So, for the last 3 baby showers I've gone to, I've purchased a diaper cake from www.lilbabycakes.com. That company has what I consider the most attractive diaper cakes and baby gift baskets out of all the websites I've been to so far.
There are a few other websites that sell diaper cakes as well, so you can simply do a search in google.com for diaper cakes and see what you come up with.
I personally don't like the diaper cakes that are completely covered with stuff. Some diaper cake companies wrap the baby cakes (another name for diaper cake) with towels, blankets, bibs, cheap looking toys & bottles and who knows what else.
I guess they do that so they can justify charging as much as they do. At least with Little Baby Cakes, their prices are very reasonable and their cakes are gorgeous.
Think you can make a diaper cake on your own? You may want to reconsider. Look at all the "ingredients" you'll need to get started...
- Diapers - between 40-150 depending on the size of your cake
- Cake board - for the cake to sit on for stability
- Ribbon - to wrap around the diapers (and it's not cheap either!)
- Hot glue gun, tape and rubber bands
- Gift wrap - either tulle or a cellophane bag will do
- All the "toppings" - this can vary depending on your taste
- Time - hope you have at least 5-6 hours to dedicate to this project!
For the one diaper cake I made, I used about 80 diapers, bought 3 stuffed animals from the store, got the ribbon from a fabric store and some other goodies from Wal-mart.
It took me about 2 hours just to get all the supplies I needed to get started. Then I had to figure out how to do it (those free instruction online don't help much). By the time I was finished, I literally spent about 6 hours and about $90 in supplies, and it still didn't look half as nice as the one's online.
These diaper cake companies are able to buy the supplies in bulk, so they can make these a lot cheaper and faster than you or I could, so that's why I just leave it to the experts :)
I would definitely check out the diaper cake idea and see if they have one you like and that you can give as a baby shower gift. You'll be the hit of the party!
