Cloth Diapers Vs. Disposable

Years ago new moms didn’t have a choice of diapers to use. There were only cloth diapers. Today, not only do we have a choice of cloth versus disposable but there are so many disposable ones to choose from. There are pluses and minuses to using each type of diaper.

You need to take your child’s health into consideration when choosing diapers. You want to do what you can to keep your child as cool and dry as possible all day leaving less chance for a diaper rash to start. Some women prefer disposable diapers because they contain a gel like ingredient that quickly absorbs the urine as soon as your child pees. While this may seem like a great idea, there have been problems linked to the substance inside the absorbent diapers.

This gel also contains dioxin which is a component of bleach. There has been some research to indicate these chemicals may pose a health risk for your baby. Because cloth diapers have no absorbent chemicals inside, they need to be checked and changed frequently in order to prevent your baby from developing a rash. However, these diapers may help a child learn to potty train quicker because your toddler will feel uncomfortable sitting in a soiled diaper.

Cost and convenience are other factors to take into consideration when choosing which diapers to use. I think disposable ones are by far the most convenient. They are easy to put on since they come with tabs. If you choose to use cloth diapers you can either pay for a laundering service or launder them yourself. The cost of cloth diapers is probably less if you choose to launder them yourself but this is not very convenient. You also need to think about what you will do with any dirty cloth diapers when you are visiting or traveling. The cost of disposable diapers can vary from brand to brand. You can try to clip and use coupons to reduce your costs whereas there are no coupons for cloth diapers or services.

The environment is another thing to consider when choosing diapers. There’s much debate on this issue. Some people feel that disposable diapers harm our environment because they sit in a landfill. Others feel that cloth diapers cause more harm to our environment because they use a lot of water and cleaners to launder them each week.

Only you can decide what will work best for you and your family. Knowing the advantages and disadvantages to both is essential in making your own decision.
