In Home Vs. Large Daycare

Finding the right daycare for your child is extremely important. For working moms, your child will be there a large part of the day and week. It’s important to find something that both you and your child are comfortable with. There are in home daycare providers and larger ones run outside of a person’s home. With so many options out there, which one should you choose? There are advantages and disadvantages to both. I have personally experienced this because my older son was in both types of daycare. Here’s what I have found:

Larger Daycare
Advantages

  • They have larger hours of operation many times allowing you to drop-off as early as 6AM and pick-up as late as 6:30PM.
  • They are more flexible with their schedules.
  • They usually follow a curriculum or daily routine
  • Most have security systems and cameras
  • Lunch and snacks are usually included in the price.
  • Some take the children on planned outings and field trips
  • A Large Daycare must be licensed and insured
  • Disadvantages

  • Larger Daycares have more staff turnover.
  • Kids get sick more often because there are so many children there.
  • Your child will not get as much individual attention.
  • Regular Daycares are more expensive than in-home daycares.
  • In Home Daycare
    Advantages

  • They have fewer children per adult.
  • Your child will have more one on one attention.
  • It’s much cheaper than regular daycares.
  • It’s a warmer environment since it’s at someone’s s home.
  • Disadvantages

  • They aren’t always licensed and insured.
  • They don’t have security systems.
  • You don’t know for sure who will be coming in and out of the house during the day.
  • Children are all grouped together and there might not be many other kids your child’s age.
  • In home daycare workers may need sick days and holiday/vacation days, leaving you with no childcare.
  • It may be harder dealing with a complaint than a regular daycare facility.
