What To Pack In Your Hospital Bag

When you reach your 35th week, you should have your hospital bag packed and ready to go. Packing essential items will help you to have a more comfortable experience in the hospital. Here’s a list of what to bring.

Pajamas-Some hospitals make you wear their hospital gowns during labor. But, you will
feel more comfortable in your own pj’s once you are in your recovery room.

Slippers-You will be encouraged to walk around after your recovery. Having slippers will be easy for you since you don’t have to bend down and tie them.

Socks-Hospitals are always cold. Bring two pairs of socks with you to keep your feet warm. You may even use a pair while in labor because the stirrups are also very cold.

Shampoo, conditioner and soap-Although the hospital usually provides these for you, they may not be the kind you like. I have found the hospital soap in particular to be very drying on my skin. I prefer to bring my own.  I wouldn’t advise bringing large bottles. Buy some travel size products that will easily fit into your bag.

Underwear and Bras-These are important to remember to bring. Bring a few of each. If you plan on nursing, make sure you bring a nursing bra.

Sanitary Napkins-The hospital will provide these to you but they do not have adhesive and they are also very long, making them uncomfortable. For the first few days, you will go through a lot of sanitary napkins, so bring a whole pack.

Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and mouth wash-You will be busy taking care of your newborn but it’s still important to take care of yourself and your teeth and gums

Bring a going home outfit for your baby. If it’s colder out, make sure you bring a bunting or warm outfit. Don’t forget baby’s hat. The hospital will provide receiving blankets for the duration of your hospital stay.

Some hospitals allow you to listen to your favorite CD or watch your favorite movie. My kids were born in two different hospitals. With my first one I had to bring my own mini boom box. With my second, the hospital had one in each room. Don’t go overboard with CD’s. Bring something peaceful and meaningful that you’ll want to listen to when your baby is born. A DVD is good to bring so you can watch your favorite movie while you’re in early labor. Each hospital is different. Check first to see if you’re allowed to bring these items.

Bring your baby book with you. You can give the nurses the page for the footprints and handprints. They will be happy to get your baby’s prints done.

Cameras and video cameras are items you definitely don’t want to forget.
Remember to bring any personal items that will help you to get through labor or help you to concentrate on a focal point during contractions. You may also bring a rolling pin or massage items for your husband to use for counter pressure.

It’s important to have everything you will need but you don’t want to over pack either. The hospital will provide diapers for your baby so you don’t need to bring any of your own. Most importantly, have your car seat installed properly. The hospital will not let you leave with your baby unless your car seat is installed correctly.
