Signs Your Baby Is Ready To Potty Train
Most kids are ready to begin potty training between 2 and 2 ½ years old. Each child is different so some may start earlier than this and some will give it a try later. It’s never a good idea to force your child to use the potty if they are not ready. Knowing when to start potty training is important. Here are a few signs that they are ready:
They wake up dry or can stay dry for hours
They are familiar with their body parts and know what “pee pee” and “poopy” means
They are having bowel movements generally at the same time each day
They can tell you when they have to go
They let you know when their diaper is wet or dirty
They get upset when their diaper is wet or dirty
Your baby can follow simple instructions and can sit for quietly for 5 minutes at a time
Your child shows interest when others in the house use the potty
They have the desire to please you and are proud and happy when they do
If you think your child is ready and they show resistance right away to the potty don’t force them to use it. Wait a few weeks or a month and then try again. Also, it’s not wise to start potty training if they aren’t in a good routine or they’ve just experienced something stressful like a new move. There are many tools you can use to help your child learn and feel comfortable on the potty.
There are so many different types of potties on the market. If you try one and they don’t like it, try another one. You can buy books and DVD’s on potty training too. Some even include the use of their favorite characters like Elmo. Take potty training slow and remember to follow your child’s cues.
